    Hello Steering Committee!

Welcome to CORD’s first online meeting using our new website! If you have made it this far, then you are doing a fantastic job navigating the new site. Since everything is brand new, we are still ironing out a few kinks, so please do let me know if you have any technical issues participating in the discussion.

To kick off the week, it would be great to hear a little bit from everyone in regards to what you have been up to over the past few months (both research and personal :). Also, if each of the working groups could provide a bit of context about what they have been working on, whether you have any upcoming plans, and to note any assistance or areas of collaboration that you may require from the rest of the group.

I will start with my own update –

In September I moved to Brighton to complete my MA at the Institute of Development Studies. It has been going very well so far – I am really enjoying the program, and Brighton is a lovely place to live. As part of my course requirements, I need to complete a 4-month action research project in a country or context of my choice. It appears that there’s a good chance (although not definite) that I may be going to the Philippines, so I would love to chat with anyone who has worked there previously. I am particularly interested in the role that education can play in deepening democracy and mobilizing young people to be active citizens of change.

    Looking forward to your updates!

    Hi all,

it’s been a very busy new year. Our UTSC Centre for Critical Development Studies is growing – I’ve been teaching three new courses, running a new seminar series on the MDGs (a critical appraisal of) and I am starting a new project on immigrant Somali women and their informal economic livelihoods in Toronto early next year. Next week I am participating in an IDRC event at the COADY Institute on “research excellence” in development research.

The mediation group has focused on completing the book. Almost all chapters are almost ready to go, and we are awaiting the actual contract from Palgrave Macmillan. The review of the proposal was extremely positive. We are planning to submit the manuscript to Palgrave in January 2014.

    Thanks!

    Bettina.

    Hi All,
A hectic year. My co-authored book ‘Battling Corruption: Has NREGA reached India’s Rural Poor?’ (with Raghav Gaiha) was published by OUP in August. Am working on a co-edited volume ‘Beyond a secular age’ and CUP is very interested in it. We plan to submit the final version next month. Also in the middle of composing the structure for my next book, an ethnography of Hyderabad’s walled city.

Spent two weeks of July in Ireland on holiday and ten days in August planning the research activities and two conferences we plan to hold at ZiF (Bielefeld University) next summer and fall. We received a large research collaborative network grant of 250000 euros to bring about 16 scholars to Bielefeld in Germany for stays ranging from 1-6 months. I am mentioning it because we should apply for it as a network. They give grants of 250000 and 500000 euros.

Working group on urban violence: Laurence, Andrew, our collaborator in Sri Lanka and I have applied to the Guggenheim foundation for a grant to conduct the study. We will know in December. Joanna was very helpful in arranging for the referees (so thanks again, Joanna). I also applied to ICSSR (India’s social science research network) for funds, so let’s see what happens. We have to plan a methodology meeting of this group in CapeTown (IDRC has given us funds for that) sometime early next year either before or after conducting the study.

Looking forward to hearing your news.

    Hello Cordizens,

Most of my Cord activities have centered on the Mediation book which is nearing as completion – expect emails to authors for final revisions shortly. Bettina and I have also submitted a journal article informed by the introduction of the Mediation book that is under consideration at the moment. I also assisted with the violence grant and am looking forward to group meeting in Cape Town next year – maybe Monkey Valley again (i’m actually writing from there for another event!).

Life after the Mediation book is a panoply of opportunities yet to be conceived (ie I haven’t thought about it much). One thing we ARE doing is looking to strengthen ties between UWC and the CCDS (with Paul, Leslie and Bettina) going forward which may help facilitate more cord activities. I visited Toronto earlier this year and we explored some possibilities. We will keep you all in the loop about that.

Otherwise, 2014 is an open vista for cord-relevant work, so looking forward to new initiatives and ideas.

    best

    Hello!
It’s nearly one year since our delhi meeting. For me a lot of time was spent on a family crisis: my husband had to undergo a second (and very very traumatic) heart surgery in early may. But thankfully, I think we are over the worst.

In the meantime he and I have collaborated on a book chapter on South Asian development regimes, and contribute a chapter titled “Bangladesh development surprise”, and used some of our findings on citizenship building from the Bangladesh DRC work.

This past year I have started work on “unpaid care” collecting time use data in north bengal and hopefully analysing national time use data collected by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. Also began secondary analysis of labour force statistics exploring female labour supply.

AT BDI we have begun to develop a masters on gender culture and development. I am responsible for several courses, particularly gender and development, gender and citizenship, and possibly on globalization.

Currently, bangladesh is in the run up to elections in january, and there is a stalemate between the two major political parties, citizens are caught in between and paying heavy costs. Is this the cost of democracy???

I look forward to catching up!

    take care and stay safe,
    simeen

    Dear all,

    Happy to reconnect.

From my side, at Cebrap I have been working on two main projects: first, the Brazil country study for the IDS Rising Powers in International Development. We are now finalizing our report and earlier this year we have published one policy brief on the topic. Second, Vera and myself we have been involved with the Independent Review Mechanism of the Open Government Partnership (OGP), and we have just published the first version of our report on Brazil. As I have mentioned to you, last week, I was in London presenting its main findings at the OGP Annual Summit.

Besides that, with my Conectas Human Rights hat, I have been working a lot on Brazilian foreign policy (notably on the notion of “emerging power”), with special attention to Brazilian policies in/to IBSA and BRICS.

Additionally, I am happy to say I have co-authored one little article on “Development and Human Rights” (see: http://www.surjournal.org/eng/conteudos/pdf/17/01.pdf) and have wrote another piece on the recent protests in Brazil.

I admitt it was a really busy year.

However, I have to say that I have miss CORD activities and I am really looking forward to re-engage.

    Warmly,

    Laura

    Dear all
Hello missing you all a lot!
I am working on a concept note to update the marginality wg agenda, I will share the note later this week.
This year I have ben involved in field work in mid-sized municipalities in the state of Sao Paulo. We are studying the implementation of basic care programs in the public health system. Very interesting and, as usual, complex.
A lot of ideas to develop within CORD.
I will be back in the afternoon (Wednesday) to discuss more our plans for the future.
    All the best,
    Vera

    Hi All
Great to see you! And really sorry for being late.
What I am currently doing –
Working on two research projects – one on National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and my research explores policy ‘from below’ with the help of cases that show positive impact; the other is about protest and participation, it builds on my earlier work on social movements and examines more recent cases particularly protests against mining. Also, desperately trying to finish a long overdue book on development. Enjoying writing, pity that I have to rush!

Update on Economic Citizenship Project –
Alison and John at Coady want to submit a proposal to IDRC. Bettina, Simeen and I had a skype discussion with them in July. Following which there was a concept note Alison wrote and circulated and we gave our comments. That was in August.
