Good morning from Brighton!
Today’s plan is to discuss upcoming possibilities for new grants and project ideas. The hope is that Laura and Vera will be able to provide more information about the Making All Voices Count proposal (which I believe is due very shortly) and Laurence and Joanna will be able to talk a bit about the Bellagio proposal. (In the latter case, I know that Joanna is very busy this week with a conference at IDS, so it may be mainly Laurence : )
November 6, 2013 at 05:54 #684Laurence PiperParticipantHi Again,
In terms of the Bellagio grant application, I know very little apart from Shylashri’s previous email about Rob Garris (Rockefeller Foundation, Bellagio Centre). Apparently Cord sounds like the kind of organisation that the Bellagio Centre would like to host, but we need to submit a proposal a year in advance.
FYI, the Bellagio Centre is a lovely estate in Italy that is perfect for a retreat type of meeting. see http://www.rockefellerfoundation.org/bellagio-center. If our application is successful they will cover the costs of accommodation and food, and perhaps some airfares from LDCs.
I think we need to reflect on whether this kind of meeting would fit into the larger Cord programme and how we would make use of it to the best end. Personally I think it crucial to meet twice a year to keep our collaboration alive and so would motivate for a gathering of all of us in late 2014. Perhaps others could comment on whether we need to meet, and what we could meet about. ie should it be a focused session of one of our groups, a more general gathering, or a combination of both… all suggestions are welcome
If we do find some agreement the ‘when’ and ‘what’ questions, I propose we have a small team engage Rob and draw up a proposal based on our plans and Bellagios requirements that is consulted with the group and then submitted.
Let’s hear what people think!
best

I had some initial positive responses last week from many of you, but we still would have to discuss it in more details.
As Becky recalled, this first round deadline is Nov. 8th. Which I am starting to consider too short. Again, last week I was told that the Programme will run for 4 years and that they will be launching calls every six months, focusing each time in a set of countries. This first round gathers: Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. They also told me the focus is not exclusive to those countries, but any compaartive approach should include those “target” countries. From our current CORD members, I suppose we only have people working in SA, right?
To have something to start off, I have sent you a initial draft proposal. Also enclosed here: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=gmail&attid=0.1.1&thid=1420ffea6c395c1d&mt=application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document&authuser=1&url=https://mail.google.com/mail/u/1/?ui%3D2%26ik%3D0c3ac2dbf1%26view%3Datt%26th%3D1420ffea6c395c1d%26attid%3D0.1.1%26disp%3Dsafe%26zw&sig=AHIEtbSK2gbyltLrEhhHeau40VjipOb2ig
To get our discussion going, I would like to propose two questions:
1- How do you feel about the proposed research framework? Any reaction is welcome.
2 – Whether we should porsue this first round on Nov.8, possibly having to adapt the framework to use South Africa as the main object. Conversely, we could also try to engage with IDS people to understand what are the future countries on their list.
Well, those are only initial thoughts. Please feel free to react to those questions or to bring new ones.
Regarding the Bellagio grant, I agree with Laurence that meeting face to face in key to keep the network alive, so I suppose any grant in this sense should be porsued.
Looking forward to hearing your comments.
Laura

on the Bellagio grant: I agree with Laurence that we should pursue a CORD meeting at Bellagio. Some of the working groups are putting in new grant proposals (to IDRC, Guggenheim, etc.) and it looks as if there is a new round of exciting work emerging. So far our collaboration has acted as an incubator for new collaborative projects and I think we are on to something very exciting with CORD. The meeting could focus on each working group’s program, and on the practices of the collaboration as a whole.
On the Make all voices count grant: November 8 is the day after tomorrow and we might have left it too late. Let’s aim at the next round in six months, as Laura suggested. I read Laura’s and Vera’s previous email and liked the research framework. Sorry, Laura, I could not open the link to the proposal above.
Bettina.
November 6, 2013 at 18:45 #688Vera CoelhoMemberI would suggest that we have a meeting in 2014 supported by the IDRC grant and a meeting in 2015 in Bellagio. At the 2014 meeting we can finalize a proposal for Bellagio.
For 2014, the IDRC grant has small amounts of money committed for the development of more coherent projects and grant proposals; which should be prepared by the working groups. As Shyla pointed out that there will be a lot of bureaucracy to transfers these funds, my suggestion is to use this money to pay for detailed concept notes prepared by the working groups to be presented and discussed at the 2014 meeting. If possible the payment for the concept notes will be done in cash/check at the meeting, avoiding complicate international transferences. The coordinator will use the money to pay for the previously defined activities. At the meeting we will have time to finalize the proposals, pack them together and submit them to Bielefeld in Germany as well as to other foundations.
For the working groups that are more advanced in this schedule we can also think about the presentation of preliminary results.

In one of Laura’s message, I think she mentioned working with a group IABS (Instituto Ambiental Brasil Sustentável, http://www.iabs.org.br/). I can’t seem to find the message now. In any case, we have just been contacted by this group and they would like to form some kind of partnership with the CCDS at UTSC.
As they are based in Brasilia and I will be there in early Dec. I thought I pay them a visit to explore possibilities.
Laura, are you still planning to attend the meeting at UnB? If so, and if this is the same group you referred to, perhaps you would like to join me with the visit. We can certainly talk about the various proposals when we meet as well.
I am currently working on an Open Science for Development project with IDRC, and I think there will be interesting overlap with the open government data area.
November 8, 2013 at 09:08 #705Laurence PiperParticipantI agree with vera’s proposal about the way ahead – seems the most feasible
November 9, 2013 at 10:43 #709rmohantyParticipantI too agree with what Vera suggest.
